World Aids Day

1st of December 2008 marked the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day.
The Hub Team, a part of Caerphilly County Borough Council Youth Service, put on an event to explore issues and myths about HIV and AIDS, and to raise awareness and support for World AIDS Day.
The youth workers, together with the young people from across the Upper Rhymney
Valley, pledged to step up their efforts in raising awareness and tackling prejudices’ surrounding HIV and AIDS, showing the world that they are leaders in the AIDS
response.
The evening, held in White Rose Resource Centre New Tredegar, highlighted that an effective response to AIDS must include young people’s voices, concerns and realities
as of the 2.7 million new HIV infections in 2007, about 45% were among young people aged 15 to 24 years.
The workshop was designed not only to raise awareness, but to also tackle issues such as homophobia and the stereotypes surrounding people with HIV and AIDS. The event
was also used to promote safer sex and sexual health services available in the area for young people.
Sian, aged 15 commented, “I think its everyone’s responsibility to raise awareness of World AIDS day. Events like this should be available to all young people. The way it was presented was informal, and I felt I could ask questions without feeling embarrassed.”
